esim basics

what an eSIM is and how it works
6

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone — there is no plastic card to insert. You buy a data plan online and install it instantly, so you can get online the moment you land instead of hunting for a local shop.

Your Z&Z eSIM sits alongside your normal SIM, so you keep your home number for calls and texts while your travel data runs on the eSIM.

When you buy a Z&Z eSIM, we provision a profile for your destination and deliver it as a QR code (and manual details). You scan it once, switch the line on, and your phone connects to a local partner network — just like roaming, but at local data prices.

Open the shop, pick your destination, choose a data plan, and pay from your Z&Z balance (or top up first). Your eSIM appears under "my esims" with its QR code and install instructions right away — no waiting for shipping.

A physical SIM is a card you swap in and out. An eSIM is software: it installs over the air in seconds, you can hold several at once, and you never risk losing or damaging a tiny card. For travel that means no local-shop queue and no swapping your home SIM out.

Yes. A Z&Z eSIM is a data plan — it does not replace your home line. Keep your primary SIM active for calls and SMS on your usual number, and set the eSIM as your data line while you travel. Use a messaging or calling app over data if you also want to call.

We cover 190+ countries with local, regional and global plans. Search your destination in the shop to see exactly which plans are available there and the data and validity options before you buy.

device compatibility

check your phone supports eSIM
5

Most phones released in the last few years support eSIM. Before you buy, use our device-compatibility checker — pick your make and model and it tells you instantly whether your phone can run a Z&Z eSIM.

Two extra things to confirm: your phone must be carrier-unlocked, and eSIM support can depend on the exact model/region variant you own.

iPhone XR / XS and newer support eSIM. To confirm: open Settings → General → About and look for an "Available eSIM" or EID entry, or open Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data and check for an "Add eSIM" option. You can also just run the Z&Z compatibility checker for a clear yes/no.

On most Android phones go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and look for "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead". On Samsung, check Settings → Connections → SIM manager. If you are unsure, the Z&Z compatibility checker resolves it for you by make and model.

A carrier-locked phone is tied to one network and will refuse other SIMs and eSIMs. If your phone is locked, ask your carrier to unlock it before you install a Z&Z eSIM. An unlocked phone accepts any plan, including ours.

We do not support eSIMs on jailbroken or rooted devices. Modifying the system software can break eSIM provisioning and network registration, so we recommend a standard, unmodified device.

installation & activation

install and switch on your eSIM
7

Open the eSIM in "my esims" to see its QR code, then on your iPhone go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code and scan it. Follow the prompts to add the plan, then label it (e.g. "Z&Z Spain").

Tip: if you are installing on the same phone that shows the QR code, choose the manual / "enter details manually" option instead and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code shown next to the QR.

Go to Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → Enter Details Manually, then copy the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from the eSIM detail in "my esims". This is the easiest way when the QR is on the same screen you are installing from.

Open your eSIM in "my esims" for the QR code. On Android go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM (or "Download a SIM instead") and scan the QR. On Samsung it is Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Confirm the prompts and the plan is installed.

You can install the eSIM any time after purchase while you have Wi-Fi or data — many people install before they travel. Most plans start counting validity from first network connection (activation) in the destination, not from install. Check the plan detail: it states whether validity starts on install or on first use.

After you arrive, set the eSIM as your data line and turn ON Data Roaming for it (this is normal for eSIMs and does not incur extra charges — it just lets the eSIM use the local partner network). Turn off data for your home SIM so it does not roam. If it still does not connect, restart the phone.

Usually no — most plans configure automatically. If you have signal but no internet, set the APN for the eSIM line. The correct APN is shown in your eSIM detail under "my esims"; enter it under the eSIM line's cellular/mobile data network settings.

An eSIM QR code can normally only be installed once. If you delete the eSIM from your phone you generally cannot re-add it with the same QR. Do not remove an active eSIM unless you are finished with it — if you have trouble, contact support before deleting it.

data & usage

track usage, hotspot, 5G

Open "my esims" and select the eSIM — the remaining data and days left are shown there. Your phone's own cellular-data usage counter can also help, but the figure in "my esims" is the one tied to your plan.

Yes, on most plans you can use the Personal Hotspot / tethering to share your eSIM data with other devices, the same as a normal data plan. Heavy hotspot use will of course consume your data faster.

5G is available where the local partner network and your plan support it and your phone is 5G-capable. If you do not see 5G, the area may only have 4G/LTE coverage, or the plan may run on 4G — you will still get fast data, just on LTE.

Z&Z eSIMs are data-only plans, so they do not include a phone number for standard calls or SMS. You can still call and message over data using apps like WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime or your carrier's Wi-Fi/data calling on your primary line.

Use Wi-Fi where you can, turn on your phone's data-saver mode, disable background app refresh and auto-playing video, and download maps/music for offline use before you go. Streaming and video calls use the most data.

A Z&Z eSIM gives you regular internet access. In a few countries some services are restricted by local rules regardless of which SIM you use. In those places a reputable VPN (installed before you travel) can help — this is a local-network restriction, not an eSIM limitation.

top-ups & validity

extend data and validity
5

Open the eSIM in "my esims" and choose "top up" to add more data to the same eSIM — no need to install a new one. Top-ups are paid from your Z&Z balance and added to the existing plan. Top up before you run out so you stay connected.

Each plan has a validity window (for example 7, 15 or 30 days) shown on the plan before you buy and again in "my esims". The plan ends when you use all the data OR when the validity period runs out — whichever comes first.

For most plans validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination (activation), not when you install it. The plan detail states this clearly — some plans start on first use, others from the moment of purchase.

Data does not roll over. When the validity period ends, any remaining data is forfeited. To keep going, top up before it expires or buy a fresh plan.

A plan is a bundle of an amount of data (e.g. 5 GB) and a number of days (e.g. 15). You can use the data at any pace within those days. Pick a plan that comfortably covers both how much data and how many days you expect to need.

my esims

manage, label, remove eSIMs
6

All your eSIMs live under "my esims". Each one shows its status, remaining data, days left, QR code and install details. Active plans appear on your home dashboard too.

Yes — when you install the eSIM your phone lets you give the line a label (e.g. "Z&Z Japan"). A clear label makes it easy to switch your data line to the right plan in your phone's cellular settings.

You can buy as many Z&Z eSIMs as you like. Your phone can store several eSIM profiles, though typically only one (plus your primary SIM) is active at a time — you switch which eSIM is your data line in your phone's settings.

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → tap the eSIM → Delete eSIM. On Android: Settings → SIMs / SIM manager → select the eSIM → Erase/Delete. Only remove a plan you are finished with — a deleted eSIM usually cannot be reinstalled from the same QR.

An installed eSIM profile cannot simply be copied to another phone, and the QR is single-use. If you change devices, contact support — depending on the plan and how much is left, we can advise on the best option for your remaining data.

No — one eSIM installs on one device. To connect a second phone, buy a separate eSIM for it, or share your connection from the first device using Personal Hotspot.

payments & refunds

balance, payment methods, refunds

Your Z&Z balance is the wallet you pay eSIMs and top-ups with. Add credit once and then buy plans in seconds without re-entering card details every time. Your balance, gifts and credits all live in one place under "balance".

Open "balance" and choose "top up". Add the amount you want and it is credited to your wallet, ready to spend on eSIMs and top-ups. You can see every top-up, purchase and credit in your recent activity.

You pay for eSIMs from your Z&Z balance, which you top up with the supported card and online payment methods shown at checkout. Once your balance is funded, buying a plan is a one-tap action.

If you bought the wrong plan or hit a problem you could not resolve, contact support. We review refund requests for eSIMs that have not been used (no data consumed) on a case-by-case basis. Used data is not refundable, so check your destination and device compatibility before you buy.

Some destinations require identity verification by local regulation before an eSIM can be activated there. When a plan needs it, we tell you during checkout and guide you through a quick, secure verification step.

Open "balance" and enter your voucher or gift code. The value is added to your Z&Z balance and can be spent on any eSIM or top-up. Gifts you receive land here automatically.

gifting & sharing

send eSIM credit to friends & family
5

Yes. Open "gift" to send Z&Z eSIM credit to friends or family — perfect for travellers. They receive it in their own Z&Z balance and pick whichever destination plan they need.

Choose an amount, send it to the recipient, and the credit lands in their Z&Z balance. They redeem it against any eSIM or top-up. You can see gifts you have sent in your recent activity.

Gifts arrive in your Z&Z balance automatically (or via a code you enter under "balance"). Once it is in your balance you can spend it on any plan, the same as money you topped up yourself.

You cannot install one eSIM on two phones, but you can share the connection live using your phone's Personal Hotspot so travel companions get online from your plan. For their own line, gift them credit and let them install their own eSIM.

Yes — use "invite" to share Z&Z with friends. Inviting and gifting both live in your account so you can bring travel companions onto the same ecosystem and split or share connectivity easily.

account

sign-in, security, your data
5

You sign in once with your Z&Z account and it works across the whole ecosystem — eSIM, keychain, chat and more. From the eSIM app, sign in or create an account to start buying plans and to keep your eSIMs, balance and gifts in one place.

No. One Z&Z account signs you into every app in the ecosystem — there are no extra passwords. Sign in once and move between eSIM, keychain, chat and the rest seamlessly.

We notify you when your account is accessed from a new device or location, so you can spot anything you do not recognise. If it was you, no action is needed. If it was not, change your password and review your account security right away.

Open "account / profile" to manage your details and preferences. Prices in the shop are shown in EUR.

Yes. You can request a copy of the data we hold and request deletion of your account from your account settings or by contacting support. We handle these requests in line with data-protection rules.

troubleshooting

fix connection and install issues
7

Run through this checklist: (1) you have arrived in the destination country; (2) the eSIM is selected as your data line; (3) Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM line; (4) your home SIM's data is OFF; (5) you have restarted the phone. This fixes the large majority of cases.

If it still does not connect, try selecting the network manually in your phone's settings, or check the APN shown in your eSIM detail. If nothing helps, contact support with your eSIM details.

If the camera will not read the QR (for example you are installing on the same phone that shows it), use the manual option instead: copy the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your eSIM detail and enter them by hand. You can also enlarge the QR or open it on a second screen and scan that.

Make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi or data connection during install, then wait a minute or two. If it stays stuck, restart your phone and check for a system update. Do not delete the eSIM while it is activating — if it will not complete, contact support before removing it.

Turn off automatic network selection in your phone's settings and pick a supported network for your plan manually. After choosing, toggle airplane mode on and off to re-register. If the issue persists, the strongest local partner network may differ by area — try another supported one.

Speeds depend on local coverage and network load. Try moving to a spot with better signal, toggling airplane mode to reconnect, or manually selecting a different supported network. Note some plans move to a reduced speed once a fair-use threshold is reached — check your plan detail.

Provisioning is usually instant. Refresh "my esims", and check your email for the confirmation. If a few minutes pass and it has still not appeared, contact support with your order details and we will track it down.

Yes — data-based messaging like iMessage, WhatsApp and Signal works over your eSIM data. iMessage and FaceTime stay tied to your Apple ID / primary number; just make sure the eSIM is your active data line so the messages send over data.
